If the Steam Deck was having the same SD card reader problems the Ally is having right now, I'm sure owners would be lot more forgiving and patient because of that trust in Valve. All of these handheld consoles have issues, of course. But what’s more costly is whether or not the company will fix your device for free, or if they will even respond. We can talk about the price difference between something like the Steam Deck and more expensive models from Asus and Ayaneo ($649 vs. Steam Deck users have faith that Valve will help if something goes wrong, which means they are happy to overlook the device's drawbacks. There’s no additional process needed to play Diablo 4, nor do I need to find an awkward solution to play my old Windows games.īut none of that matters if the console doesn't work properly. Emulation, installing mods, accessing files on my local network and playing non-steam games are easier on a Windows machine. Windows on handheld consoles has rightly come in for some criticism because it is more bloated than Steam OS, buggy and the respective proprietary software from Asus and Ayaneo isn’t as slick as Valve’s product.
Windows also makes life easier if your games and accounts are distributed across a few platforms. Under the hood both the Ally and Ayaneo 2S vastly outgun the Steam Deck. But the lighter, smaller and slimmer profile of the Asus Rog Ally looks better to my eye.
The Steam Deck’s almost brutalist, no-thrills, design has its own appeal.
